Kangen Water in San Miguel de Allende

Drawn Health offers free Kangen water tastings, Enagic K8 demonstrations, and 30-minute water wellness consultations for locals, expats, and visitors in San Miguel de Allende.

Drawn Health is operated by Aimee Devlin, an authorised Enagic distributor (ID: 1916898) based full-time in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.
The Enagic K8 produces 7 water types—drinking, cooking, neutral, beauty, and cleaning waters—from a single countertop unit.
San Miguel de Allende sits at approximately 1,900 metres above sea level. At altitude, the body loses water faster through respiration, and the case for quality hydration is stronger.
Garrafón water delivery in SMA typically costs $450–$830 USD/year for a family of four (50–70 pesos per jug, 3–4 jugs per week at current exchange rates). The K8 filter costs approximately $150/year and produces water continuously.
Many people who rent homes seek a more portable alternative to installing an undersink reverse osmosis system.
In-person tastings and demonstrations are free and available by appointment in San Miguel.

The water problem in San Miguel de Allende

Tap water in San Miguel is not potable. Most households and expats default to one of four options: garrafón delivery (20-litre jugs), reverse osmosis from a local pickup point, a reverse osmosis system under the sink, or bottled water from supermarkets like City Market, Mercado Sano, or La Comer.

Each has real limitations. Garrafón is logistically annoying, supplied by large brands that take money away from the local economy, and quality varies by supplier—most local services don't publish their filtration or testing standards. Reverse osmosis removes contaminants effectively but also strips the minerals that make water beneficial—calcium, magnesium, bicarbonates—producing flat, slightly acidic water that isn't health-promoting. Bottled water quality varies, contains microplastics, creates significant plastic waste, and costs more per litre than either alternative.

A Kangen K8 ionizer addresses what none of these does: it filters the source water, then electrolyses it to produce hydrogen-rich, alkaline drinking water while preserving the beneficial minerals. It also produces six additional water types—for cooking, skin care, cleaning, and disinfecting—from the same unit.

What we offer in San Miguel

We're based full-time in San Miguel de Allende and offer three ways to experience Kangen water before making any decision:

Free water tasting

Living at altitude — the hydration case

San Miguel de Allende sits at approximately 1,900 metres above sea level. At altitude, the body loses water faster through increased respiration rate and perspiration—a mechanism the body uses to regulate temperature and oxygen exchange. Most people who move to SMA from sea level report that adequate daily hydration requires more conscious effort than they were used to.

Some research on hydrogen-rich water—the type produced by electrolytic ionizers like the K8—suggests it may support cellular hydration more efficiently than standard water due to the presence of dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂). The clinical research is ongoing and not yet conclusive for altitude-specific applications, but the general hydration case at altitude is well established.

What we've noticed personally: since using the K8 in San Miguel, we drink more water, feel better at altitude, and have eliminated plastic bottle waste from the house entirely.

Kangen water vs garrafón in San Miguel

For expats and long-term residents, garrafón is the default—but it's worth running the numbers.

Replacing Microdyn and produce washing

Most households in San Miguel use Microdyn or Bacdyn—an ionised silver solution—to disinfect produce before eating it. It kills bacteria and pathogens on the surface. It does not remove pesticides, wax coatings, or chemical residues. For that, most people use vinegar or hydrogen peroxide (agua oxigenada), neither of which is particularly effective.

The K8 produces two outputs that address both problems from the same unit:

11.5 pH Strong Kangen Water — produce washing

At 11.5 pH, the strongly alkaline water emulsifies wax and oil-based pesticide coatings through saponification—the same chemistry as soap. Soak produce for 10 minutes and the water turns visibly cloudy as residue separates. No chemicals, no toxins, no smell, and no extra product to keep in the house.

2.5 pH Strong Acidic Water — disinfection

The 2.5 output is hypochlorous acid (HOCl), the same compound used in hospital wound care and surface disinfection—per WHO guidance (2021) and documented in Scientific American as more effective than bleach for pathogen elimination. It kills bacteria and viruses on contact and is more effective than ionised silver—the active ingredient in Microdyn and Bacdyn. Use it to rinse produce after the 11.5 soak, clean food preparation surfaces, or disinfect kitchen tools.

Together, these two waters replace both Microdyn/Bacdyn and the kitchen cleaning sprays that most SMA households stock—produced on demand from the tap, at no cost beyond the annual filter and electrolysis enhancer.

Does the K8 work with San Miguel tap water?

SMA tap water is not potable and contains varying levels of minerals, sediment, and treatment chemicals depending on the neighbourhood and source. The K8's internal filter (replaced annually at ~$150) handles standard municipal treatment chemicals, chlorine, and sediment.

For source water with high TDS (total dissolved solids), heavy metals, or PFAS contamination, a pre-filter before the K8 is recommended. We assess your specific water source as part of the consultation—what the water report shows determines whether the K8 alone is sufficient or whether a pre-filter makes sense.

If you've had your SMA water tested, bring the report to the consultation and we'll go through it with you. If you haven't, we'll assess your source water as part of the session—the neighbourhood and water source in SMA matters more than a generic city-level report.

Kangen water vs reverse osmosis in San Miguel

Most plumbers in SMA install reverse osmosis systems under the kitchen sink. They work well for removing contaminants, but they also remove beneficial minerals and produce slightly acidic water—the opposite of what the K8 produces.

Reverse OsmosisEnagic K8
Removes contaminants✓ (with pre-filter for heavy metals/PFAS)
Preserves beneficial minerals✗ (removes ~95%)✓ (retains calcium, magnesium)
Produces alkaline water✓ (8.5–9.5 pH)
Produces hydrogen-rich water
Produces cleaning/disinfection water✓ (11.5 and 2.5 pH)
Annual cost$100–$300 (filters + membrane)~$150 (filter)
Wastes water~3–5L per litre producedNone

Note: Kangen water ionisers produce electrochemically activated water, not water that is chemically alkaline. The term “alkaline” is used here because it's the widely understood descriptor, but the mechanism—electrolysis—is distinct from mineral-based alkalinity.

Is Kangen water a good alternative to garrafón in San Miguel de Allende?

For households that primarily want to replace garrafón delivery, a Kangen K8 produces continuous drinking water at a running cost of approximately $200/year in filters, e-cleaning powder, and electrolysis enhancer—compared to the typical garrafón spend of $450–$830/year for a family of four. Unlike garrafón, the K8 also produces 6 additional water types for cooking, cleaning, skin care, degreasing, and disinfection.

Does altitude affect hydration in San Miguel de Allende?

San Miguel de Allende sits at approximately 1,900 metres above sea level. At altitude, the body loses water faster through respiration and perspiration, and some research suggests hydrogen-rich water may support cellular hydration more efficiently than standard water. Many expats and visitors to SMA report that adequate hydration at altitude requires more conscious effort than at sea level.

Can the Kangen K8 be used with San Miguel de Allende tap water?

San Miguel tap water is not potable and contains varying levels of minerals, sediment, and treatment chemicals. The K8's internal filter handles standard municipal treatment chemicals and sediment, but source water with high TDS, heavy metals, or PFAS contamination requires a pre-filter before the K8. We assess your specific water quality as part of the consultation.

Does the K8 replace Microdyn or Bacdyn for washing produce in San Miguel?

Yes, and it goes further. Microdyn and Bacdyn (ionised silver) are disinfectants—they kill bacteria and pathogens on produce surfaces. The K8's 2.5 pH output (hypochlorous acid) does the same job more effectively. But Microdyn and Bacdyn have never removed pesticides or wax coatings. The K8's 11.5 pH output addresses this through saponification: soak produce for 5–10 minutes and the water turns cloudy as wax and pesticide residues separate. Together, 2.5 and 11.5 pH water replace both Microdyn/Bacdyn and produce wash products from the same machine at no additional cost.
