Key facts

  • Ukon uses Curcuma aromatica (spring turmeric / wild turmeric), not the Curcuma longa found in most commercial turmeric supplements — spring turmeric is higher in essential oils and lower in curcumin, a different phytochemical profile, not an inferior one.
  • Grown in Yanbaru, northern Okinawa — one of the world's Blue Zones — on dedicated organic farms without synthetic pesticides or herbicides.
  • The only water used in growing, washing, and processing is Kangen Water: roots are sterilised in strong acidic water (pH 2.5) and washed in strong alkaline water (pH 11.5) before processing.
  • Formulated as an oil-based softgel — curcumin bioavailability does not depend on piperine (black pepper) because the lipid base aids absorption directly.
  • Each capsule is individually sealed in press-through packaging (PTP) — individual blister seals that protect against moisture and oxidation until the moment of use.
  • Recommended dose: 3 capsules per day for adults. Each box contains 100 capsules. Ukon DD costs $91/box ($910 per 4-month renewal, 10 boxes). Ukon Sigma costs $88.67/box ($2,660 annually, 30 boxes).

What is Kangen Ukon?

Kangen Ukon (還元 ウコン) is not a marketing rebrand of standard turmeric. It is a specific product built around two turmeric species grown in Okinawa: Curcuma longa (autumn turmeric, high in curcumin) and Curcuma aromatica (wild turmeric / spring turmeric, high in essential oils). Most commercial supplements use Curcuma longa alone. Ukon combines both to capture a broader phytochemical profile — and the processing method is designed to preserve what standard extraction destroys.

Where does Kangen Ukon come from?

Yanbaru, northern Okinawa

The Ukon used in Enagic's supplement is grown in Yanbaru (山原), the forested, mountainous northern region of Okinawa Island. Yanbaru was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in July 2021, recognised for a biodiversity that belies its size: while Yanbaru accounts for less than 0.1% of Japan's total land area, it is home to roughly half the country's bird species and a quarter of its native frog species.

Enagic farms Okinawan turmeric in Yanbaru on dedicated organic plots, using no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers. The region's volcanic red soil (jaagaraa in the Okinawan dialect), subtropical humidity, and long hours of sunlight create conditions considered optimal for spring turmeric cultivation.

Okinawa as a Blue Zone

Okinawa is one of the world's Blue Zones, the longevity regions documented by Dan Buettner. The traditional Okinawan diet is frequently cited in longevity research, and ukon (turmeric) has been part of Okinawan food culture since the Ryukyu Dynasty (1429–1879), used in teas, seasonings, and ceremonial food preparation long before turmeric became a mainstream wellness trend.

Enagic's sourcing decision is rooted in a provenance story with genuine historical and cultural depth — not a marketing gloss applied to commodity turmeric.

How is Kangen Ukon made?

All processing takes place at Kangen Foods Okinawa — Enagic's dedicated factory in Yanbaru. From harvest to encapsulation, eleven steps, every one using Kangen water where water is involved.

Kangen Ukon manufacturing process — 11 steps from farm to capsule

Farm & harvest
Washing & sterilisation
Processing
Quality control
  1. Farm & harvest

    Harvest by contracted farmers

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 01: Harvest by contracted farmers

Both spring (Curcuma aromatica) and autumn (Curcuma longa) turmeric are harvested by hand from Enagic's contracted farms in the Yanbaru region of northern Okinawa and transported directly to the Kangen Foods Okinawa factory.

  2. Washing & sterilisation

Cleaning and sterilisation with Super 501s

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 02: Cleaning and sterilisation with Super 501s

Enagic's Super 501 ioniser units are used to generate the water for cleaning and sterilising the roots. Peeling the turmeric at this stage reduces soil bacteria on the surface.

    Kangen water technology
  3. Washing & sterilisation

    Strong acidic water shower wash

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 03: Strong acidic water shower wash

The peeled roots pass through a low-pressure shower tunnel using strong acidic water (pH 2.5). The antimicrobial properties of the acidic water sanitise the surface of the roots without chemical additives.

Strong acidic water — pH 2.5
  4. Washing & sterilisation

    High-pressure rinse

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 04: High-pressure rinse

A high-pressure water rinse removes remaining surface dirt and residue after the acidic wash, preparing the roots for the next stage.

  5. Washing & sterilisation

    Kangen water neutralisation

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 05: Kangen water neutralisation

Strong reduced Kangen water (alkaline) is used to return the roots to a neutral pH after the acidic wash, preserving the natural flavour and phytochemical quality of the turmeric.

Strong Kangen water — alkaline pH
  6. Processing

    Slicing and drying

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 06: Slicing and drying

Sliced turmeric passes along a conveyor and enters the dryer. Low-temperature, slow drying is used to preserve the essential oil content that high-heat processing would destroy.

  7. Processing

    Air conveyor transport and powdering

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 07: Air conveyor transport and powdering

Dried turmeric chips are transported by air conveyor to the powdering stage, where they are ground into a fine powder ready for distillation and encapsulation.

  8. Processing

    Steam distillation of turmeric oils

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 08: Steam distillation of turmeric oils

Coarsely powdered turmeric is put through a distiller to extract both spring and autumn turmeric essential oils. These oils — concentrated sources of ar-turmerone and curcuminoids — are used in the supplements and the Ukon soap.

  9. Processing

    Tea powder sterilisation

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 09: Tea powder sterilisation

Autumn turmeric powder designated for Ukon Tea is sterilised separately in a dedicated steriliser before proceeding to the tea processing line.

  10. Quality control

    Microbiological and physicochemical testing

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 10: Microbiological and physicochemical testing

Every batch undergoes microbiological and physicochemical testing in the Quality Control Department at Kangen Foods Okinawa before it can proceed. Batches that do not pass are not released.

  11. Quality control

    Tea processing and PTP encapsulation

Kangen Ukon manufacturing — step 11: Tea processing and PTP encapsulation

Turmeric powder that passes inspection is processed into Ukon Tea bags. Supplement capsules are filled with the oil-based formula and sealed into press-through packaging (PTP) — individual blister seals that protect each capsule from oxidation until the moment of use.

Kangen Ukon benefits — what the research actually says

Discussion about the benefits of Kangen Ukon starts with what the research supports for turmeric as a category, then narrows to what is specific to Curcuma aromatica and the Ukon formulation.

What the broader turmeric and curcumin research supports

  • Anti-inflammatory activity — curcumin inhibits NF-κB, a key regulator of inflammatory gene expression; well-documented in vitro and in animal studies, with supportive human trials in joint health and inflammatory bowel contexts
  • Antioxidant activity — curcumin scavenges free radicals directly and upregulates endogenous antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase)
  • Liver support — the combination of curcumin and turmeric's essential oils stimulates bile production in the gallbladder, supporting the liver's metabolic and detoxification functions; this mechanism is most directly relevant to Curcuma aromatica, which is high in essential oils

What is specific to Curcuma aromatica (spring turmeric)

The essential oil profile of spring turmeric — particularly ar-turmerone — has been researched independently of curcumin. Ar-turmerone has shown neuroprotective activity in some studies (including neural stem cell proliferation research), antifungal properties, and anti-proliferative activity in some cancer cell line studies. This research is preliminary and not yet sufficient for health claims, but it represents a biologically distinct mechanism from curcumin that makes spring turmeric pharmacologically interesting in its own right.

Ukon is not a treatment or cure for any disease. The research base for turmeric and curcumin, while large, does not yet support regulatory health claims in the US, EU, or Australia. Enagic's Ukon is a dietary supplement — not a medical device or pharmaceutical.

Kangen Ukon vs standard turmeric supplements

FeatureKangen Ukon (Ukon DD)Standard turmeric supplement
SpeciesCurcuma aromatica (spring / wild turmeric) + Curcuma longaCurcuma longa (autumn turmeric)
Active profileEssential oils + curcuminoidsPrimarily curcuminoids (often standardised to 95% curcumin)
Bioavailability methodOil-based softgel (lipid carrier)Usually requires piperine (black pepper) or fat for absorption
Oxidation protectionIndividually sealed per capsule (PTP)Bottled; exposed to air on each use
SourceOrganic farms, Yanbaru, OkinawaTypically India, China, or Indonesia; sourcing varies widely

Capsule material100% botanical (seaweed / carrageenan)Often gelatin; botanical options available but less common
Price per box (100 caps)$88.67–$91 USD$15–60 USD for 90–120 capsules

The price difference is real and significant. Kangen Ukon costs substantially more upfront than a standard turmeric supplement — but the per-day cost is lower than it first appears. Ukon DD delivers 1,000 capsules every 4 months at $910, which at the label dose of 3 capsules per day works out to approximately $2.73 per day or $91 per box. Ukon Sigma delivers 3,000 capsules annually at $2,660 — $2.66 per day or $88.67 per box. Whether the premium is justified depends on which attributes you value: species specificity, essential oil preservation, oxidation protection, sourcing provenance, and oil-based bioavailability.

Ukon is not a marketing rebrand of standard turmeric. It is built around two species grown in Okinawa — and the processing method is designed to preserve what standard extraction destroys.

Kangen Ukon Tea and Soap

Ukon Tea

Made with Autumn Turmeric (Curcuma longa), naturally high in curcumin — a different variety from the spring turmeric used in the supplement's essential oil component. The ukon drink can be consumed hot or cold and pairs well with Kangen Water at 8.5 or 9.5 pH. Because the tea format lacks the oil-based carrier of the softgel, a pinch of black pepper (piperine) can be added to support curcumin bioavailability.

Ukon Soap

A turmeric and honey bar soap for face, body, and hair. Contains honey (not vegan). The active turmeric compounds are applied topically rather than ingested — relevant for skin-focused benefits. Turmeric is traditionally used for sun-damaged skin and as an anti-inflammatory topical.

Is turmeric alkaline?

Turmeric is slightly acidic in its raw form (pH approximately 5.5–6.5), but its metabolic effect on the body is a separate question from its pH as a substance. The more relevant consideration is the Kangen Water connection: Ukon is processed with alkaline and acidic Kangen Water during production, and Enagic recommends consuming Ukon capsules with Kangen drinking water (8.5 or 9.5 pH). Both independently have research-supported antioxidant activity.

Dosage and how to take Kangen Ukon

  • Recommended dose: 3 capsules per serving per the label; some practitioners recommend up to 5–6 capsules daily — consult your healthcare provider before exceeding the label dose
  • Timing: Can be taken at any time; no specific food requirement due to the oil-based formulation, though taking with a meal is common
  • Medication note: Take Ukon with neutral water (pH 7.0) if you are also taking prescription medications, and wait 30–60 minutes before returning to alkaline water
  • Children: Consult your healthcare provider before giving Ukon to children

Side effects and who should take extra care

Kangen Ukon side effects in the context of a well-formulated turmeric supplement are generally mild. Reported effects in the turmeric research literature include:

  • Mild digestive upset at high doses — less common with oil-based formulations than with dry powder
  • Turmeric can have mild blood-thinning properties at supplemental doses; people on anticoagulants (warfarin, aspirin therapy) should consult their health practitioner before starting any turmeric supplement
  • Turmeric stimulates bile production; people with gallstones or bile duct obstruction should avoid high-dose turmeric supplementation without medical guidance
  • Allergic reactions to turmeric are rare but documented

For healthy adults with no contraindications, a well-formulated turmeric supplement at the recommended dose has a low risk profile.

Beyond the capsule: how Ukon users are using it

The recommended use for Ukon DD is straightforward: take three capsules daily with water. But community use has surfaced a range of topical and culinary applications worth knowing about.

  • Capsule as a face mask. Pierce or bite open a capsule and apply the oil directly to the skin as a spot treatment or short face mask for 15–20 minutes, then rinse. Some users mix the oil with kaolin clay for a thicker consistency. Turmeric's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties are well-documented topically.
  • Teeth whitening. Apply the oil across the front teeth, leave for a few minutes, then rinse. The curcumin pigment is photodegradable — it breaks down on exposure to UV light. Done in the morning before sun exposure, any residual staining dissipates within an hour or two.
  • Ukon Tea in the bath. Drop two or three tea bags into a warm bath and soak. Turmeric has been used as a bath additive in Ayurvedic and traditional Southeast Asian practice for centuries.
  • Ukon Tea in cooking. Tea bags steep well into slow-cooked stews, soups, and broths. Also works blended into chai or as the base for a turmeric latte.
  • Frozen tea bags for skin irritation. Steep, freeze, and apply directly to irritated or inflamed skin as a cold compress — practical for minor irritation, insect bites, or post-sun skin.
  • Gold milk paste. Pierce capsules and combine the oil with warm plant milk, a small amount of honey or maple syrup, and black pepper for a traditional golden milk preparation using Ukon rather than turmeric powder.

One practical note: the Ukon capsule is an oil-based softgel designed for internal use. Enagic does not make topical claims for the product. These are community-reported uses, not manufacturer recommendations.

Is Kangen Ukon worth it?

We use Ukon daily. We sell Ukon. Both of those facts are disclosed, and neither disqualifies an honest assessment.

What Ukon is: a premium-category turmeric supplement with genuine product differentiators — species specificity, organic Okinawan provenance, individual oxidation protection, oil-based bioavailability, and processing with Kangen Water. These are not marketing fictions.

What Ukon is not: a miracle supplement, a treatment for any disease, or a substitute for medical care.

Our view: if you take turmeric regularly as part of a deliberate supplement regimen, the Ukon formulation is superior to most of what is available at retail — on purity, provenance, oxidation protection, and essential oil preservation. If you are not already a consistent turmeric user and are considering Ukon primarily because of the business structure it creates in an Enagic distributor context, the health case should be evaluated on its own merits first.

FAQ

What is Kangen Ukon?

+

Kangen Ukon is Enagic's turmeric supplement, combining both Curcuma longa (autumn turmeric, high in curcumin) and Curcuma aromatica (spring turmeric / wild turmeric, high in essential oils), grown organically on farms in the Yanbaru region of Okinawa, Japan. It is formulated as an oil-based softgel with perilla oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil, evening primrose oil, tocotrienols, and a vitamin complex including B1, B2, B3, B9, B12, C, and E. Each capsule is individually sealed in press-through packaging (PTP) to protect against oxidation.

What is the difference between Ukon and regular turmeric?

+

Standard turmeric supplements typically use Curcuma longa alone, selected for high curcumin content. Kangen Ukon combines both Curcuma longa and Curcuma aromatica (spring turmeric / wild turmeric), capturing a broader phytochemical profile — curcuminoids from autumn turmeric alongside the essential oil compounds (particularly ar-turmerone) from spring wild turmeric. It is processed as an oil-based softgel rather than dry powder, which affects both the active compound profile and bioavailability.

What are the Kangen Ukon benefits?

+

Kangen Ukon benefits include anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity from curcuminoids and essential oils, liver and bile production support, and a full-spectrum phytochemical profile that includes ar-turmerone and other essential oil compounds not present in standardised curcumin extracts. These benefits are consistent with the broader turmeric and curcumin research base and are not specific health claims.

What is Okinawan turmeric?

+

Okinawan turmeric is Curcuma aromatica — the spring or wild turmeric variety historically cultivated in Okinawa, Japan. It has been used in Okinawan food culture for centuries, particularly during the Ryukyu Dynasty. It differs from Curcuma longa in its essential oil content and phytochemical profile. Enagic grows and sources its Ukon supplement from the Yanbaru region of northern Okinawa.

What is Kangen Ukon Tea?

+

Kangen Ukon Tea is made with Autumn Turmeric (Curcuma longa), naturally high in curcumin. It can be consumed hot or cold. Because the tea format lacks the oil-based carrier of the softgel, adding black pepper (piperine) supports curcumin absorption if that is the primary intended benefit.

What is the Kangen Ukon price?

+

Ukon DD costs $910 every 4 months and delivers 10 boxes (1,000 capsules). At the label dose of 3 capsules per day, that is approximately an 11-month supply per renewal — $2.73 per day or $91 per box. Ukon Sigma costs $2,660 annually and delivers 30 boxes (3,000 capsules) — $2.66 per day or $88.67 per box. Neither program is available as a single-box purchase; both require enrollment in the autoship program. Financing is available on both.

Is Kangen Ukon vegan?

+

The Ukon supplement capsule uses carrageenan (seaweed extract) as the softgel shell — suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The Ukon soap contains honey and is not vegan. The Ukon Tea is vegan.

Can I take Kangen Ukon with medication?

+

If you are taking prescription medication, take Ukon with neutral water (pH 7.0) and consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting any turmeric supplement. People on anticoagulants, those with gallstones, or those with bile duct issues should seek medical guidance before using high-dose turmeric supplements.

What is Curcuma aromatica?

+

Curcuma aromatica is the botanical species also called spring turmeric or wild turmeric. It is a member of the ginger family, native to Southeast Asia, and cultivated in Japan (particularly Okinawa) for centuries. It is botanically distinct from Curcuma longa (the autumn turmeric used in most commercial supplements), with a higher essential oil content and a different curcuminoid profile.

Where can I buy Kangen Ukon?

+

Kangen Ukon is sold exclusively through Enagic's authorised distributor network. It is not available in retail stores or on third-party platforms like Amazon. To purchase, you need to buy through an Enagic distributor — or book a consultation with Drawn Health and we can process your order directly.
